How does the I Ching work?

The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is one of the oldest books of China. Its 64 hexagrams describe the kinds of situations a life passes through. Each hexagram is two trigrams, one above the other: Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain and Earth.

How does an I Ching reading work?

Think of your question and toss three coins six times. Each toss gives one line, from the bottom up: heads count 3 and tails 2, so each line adds up to 6, 7, 8 or 9. Odd numbers make a solid line, even numbers a broken one, and the six lines form one of 64 hexagrams.

What are changing lines?

A 6 or a 9 is a changing line: it is about to turn into its opposite. Changing lines show where the situation is moving, and turning them over gives a second hexagram that describes where it leads.

Is it free?

Yes. Casting your hexagram and reading its meaning are free, with no sign-up. A personal interpretation of your cast, its changing lines and your question costs 20 crystals.

Is the I Ching a prediction?

No. The I Ching is a book of wisdom for reflection. It helps you look at a situation from a new angle; it does not predict the future or replace professional advice.
