Your Sun, Moon and rising signs, often called your Big Three, are the three most important parts of a birth chart. Your Sun sign describes your core identity, your Moon sign your emotional needs, and your rising sign (the Ascendant) the first impression you make. The Sun changes sign about once a month, the Moon about every 2.5 days and the rising sign about every 2 hours.
What is the difference between the three?
| Sun sign | Moon sign | Rising sign | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it describes | Who you are at the core | What you need to feel safe | How others first see you |
| How it is found | Where the Sun was on your birth date | Where the Moon was at your birth | Which sign was on the eastern horizon |
| Changes sign every | About 30 days | About 2.5 days | About 2 hours |
| Needs your birth time? | Rarely | Sometimes | Always |
What does your Sun sign mean?
The Sun sign is the one most people know, the sign in horoscope columns. It describes your sense of self, your will and what makes you feel alive. Someone with the Sun in Aries is built to begin things, while someone with the Sun in Taurus builds slowly and values what lasts.
The Sun moves into a new sign around the 20th of each month, but the exact day shifts a little from year to year. If you were born near the change, a calculator that uses your exact birth time will tell you which side you fall on.
What does your Moon sign mean?
The Moon sign describes your emotional life: what comforts you, how you react under stress and what you need from the people close to you. A Moon in Cancer needs a safe home and close family, while a Moon in Aquarius needs freedom and friendship.
Because the Moon changes sign every two to three days, people born on the same day of the same year can have different Moon signs, depending on the hour.
What does your rising sign mean?
Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It describes your outward style and the first impression you make, before people get to know you. Leo rising tends to make an entrance; Virgo rising tends to observe first.
The rising sign also sets the twelve houses of your chart and the planet that rules your chart. That is why it needs an accurate birth time: it moves about one degree every four minutes.
How do the three work together?
Think of them as layers. People first meet your rising sign, then discover your Sun sign as they get to know you, and only those closest to you see your Moon sign. When the three are in signs of the same element, what people see matches what you feel; when they differ, you may feel more complex than you appear.
